A reliable roof, a solid window, porches that aren’t rickety—these are among the blessings that many Chester County residents take for granted.
But others, especially those on a limited fixed income, aren’t so lucky. That’s why United Way of Chester County launched the Share the Warmth program to help our neighbors make home repairs before the most brutal months of the year.
Since 2005, Share the Warmth has helped 488 families restore their homes through replacement windows, roof repairs, new furnaces and other home repairs. These repairs not only restore homes in need of repair, but they restore hope for many who had given up. In total, Daily Local News readers have provided $851,488 for these services to deserving and grateful families.
“We know that winter can be a tough time for families without adequate housing,” says Claudia Hellebush, President & CEO of United Way of Chester County. “After Hurricane Katrina, one of our board committees came up with this proactive initiative to help those locally in need to repair their homes and reduce their consumption of costly heating fuel.”
All donations are used to fund home repairs by Good Works and Good Neighbors Home Repairs. Both of these Chester County nonprofits train and manage community volunteers in completing the majority of the work.
“The cold weather increases the requests for new or improved heat, hot water, and anything else that takes the chill out of the air,” says Harold Naylor, Executive Director of Good Neighbors Home Repair. “Your donations will help our neighbors to stay warm, dry and safe this winter.”
Nearly 600 Chester County individuals don’t have a permanent home on any given day. “It’s kind and compassionate to help our low-income neighbors to stay in their homes,” says Robert Beggs, Executive Director of Good Works. “Giving to Share the Warmth is an easy and practical way to keep families from becoming homeless.”
