National Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day

Friday, January 27, 2012

Created in 1975, EITC helps offset the impact of Social Security taxes and provides an incentive for work. It is the federal government's largest benefit and anti-poverty program for workers, annually lifting 6.6 million people out of poverty; half of these are children.  Last year, over 26 million workers received nearly $59 billion in EITC.  More than 60 percent of all tax returns claiming EITC are filed during February.

As a local partner in the IRS’s national VITA initiative, the LTM VITA program will be offering FREE income tax preparation and electronic filing in Coatesville, West Chester, Phoenixville, Kennett Square, Exton and Honey Brook.  No appointment is necessary (first come, first served) and a list of sites, hours, what to bring and services available through VITA is available at www.QuietRevolution.org/VITA.

Anyone with earnings under $49,078 should see if they qualify for the EITC at www.irs.gov/eitc, or by visiting a VITA site.
The maximum EITC credit is:

  • $5,751 with three or more qualifying children
  • $5,112 with two qualifying children
  • $3,094 with one qualifying child
  • $464 with no qualifying children
