UWCC SALUTES LOCAL GROUPS HONORING MLK, JR. DAY WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE The events of the day will engage nearly 300 adults and young people and embraces the objectives of the national Martin Luther King Day of Service to strengthen the knowledge, competence and character of youth by providing information, programs and opportunities for young people in our community to grow up strong, confident and involved. Claudia Hellebush, President and CEO of United Way of Chester County, says “Service to one’s community has never been more valuable. United Way and our volunteers recognize that basic help is critically important in trying economic times. Volunteering can turn simple acts of kindness into tremendous change.” Mary Anne Feeley, United Way Manager of Community Initiatives, adds, “The faith-based and service communities represent a large portion of the population. The short-term impact of this kind of Day of Service is immediate but the long-term potential is limitless.” Service projects in previous years have included child care at St. Agnes Day Room, sorting and organizing food for the Cares Food Network food bank, library maintenance and event clean-up at the Charles A. Melton Center, painting and cleaning at the Care Center for Christ, home repair with Good Works, and more. For more information please contact Mary Anne Feeley at 610-429-9400. |
